Jeremy Hunt - Rural Crime

Beneath the tranquil beauty of Surrey's countryside, a pressing challenge has arisen, bringing rural crime into the spotlight and demanding urgent action. Addressing this growing concern, Jeremy Hunt, MP for South West Surrey, has stepped into the fray, signalling a robust response to the unsettling spike in unlawful activities distressing the local communities.

Recently, near Thorncombe Street, Jeremy Hunt organised a pivotal gathering, bringing together nearly 60 stakeholders directly impacted by these crimes. This assembly included local farmers, rural homeowners, law enforcement officers from Surrey Police, and notable figures such as Deputy PCC for Surrey Ellie Vesey-Thompson, alongside representatives from the National Farmers Union (NFU) and local councillors from neighbouring parishes.

The meeting served as a platform to shed light on the distressing wave of crimes that have plagued the area. Among the discussed incidents was the heinous act of violence in January, where 14 lambs were senselessly killed south of Bramley. The discussions extended to address the theft of valuable plant machinery and livestock—a significant blow to the hardworking farmers of Surrey—and the increasing instances of antisocial behaviour and harassment tormenting the locals.

However, amidst these troubling events, a beacon of hope was evident. Hunt expressed admiration for the proactive stance taken by the community in collaboration with Surrey Police. This partnership has led to tangible results: the apprehension and bailing of suspects, the seizure of vehicles, and the retrieval and return of stolen items, marking a notable success in February alone.

The initiative demonstrates Surrey Police's commendable effort to fortify relationships with the rural populace. Their strategy emphasises increased communication and prompt crime reporting. Jeremy Hunt lauded these developments and pledged to continue working with Surrey Police and the PCC Lisa Townsend to build on this momentum.

As this campaign against rural crime unfolds, it's clear that Jeremy Hunt and the involved stakeholders are determined to restore peace and security to Surrey's countryside. With a united front of community members, law enforcement, and political leaders, there's a hopeful path forward in combating these disturbances, ensuring that the pastoral charm of Surrey remains undiminished by criminal activities.

This concerted effort underscores a pivotal moment in the fight against rural crime, marking a step in the right direction towards safeguarding the livelihoods and well-being of Surrey's rural communities. As progress continues, the vigilance and commitment of all parties promise a brighter, more secure future for the region.
