In a show of unwavering support for safer, child-friendly transportation, Councillor Paul Deach, the Deputy Cabinet Member to the Leader of Surrey County Council and Active Travel Champion for Surrey, participated in the recent Kidical Mass Ride in Guildford. The event, part of a global movement advocating for the rights of children and young people to move safely and independently on foot or by bike, drew participants from across the community, highlighting the growing momentum behind active travel initiatives.

Councillor Deach, not only participated in the ride but also assisted the Marshall team, helping to ensure the event ran smoothly and safely for the numerous families in attendance. His involvement underscores his commitment to communities where active travel is not just possible but encouraged and celebrated.

The streets of Guildford were buzzing as children of various ages navigated their bicycles, cheered on by parents, community leaders, and local dignitaries. Notable attendees included the Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey, Lisa Townsend and Guildford MP Angela Richardson, who expressed enthusiastic support for the cause by cheering on the young riders. The event was opened by the Deputy Mayor of Guildford, Councillor Sallie Barker.

"The Kidical Mass Ride is a fantastic example of what we can achieve when we come together as a community to support the active mobility of our younger generation," said Councillor Deach. "It’s about more than just riding bikes; it’s about advocating for the infrastructure and support needed to make active travel a viable and safe choice for our children."

This year's event in Guildford is part of a broader vision that aligns with the Council's objectives to enhance transport and mobility options that are sustainable, secure, and accessible to all age groups. Initiatives like these play a crucial role in not only promoting physical activity among young people but also in shaping a future where car-free travel is a norm rather than an exception.

As communities continue to grapple with issues of transportation, safety, and sustainability, the leadership of figures like Councillor Deach provide a beacon of hope towards more livable, child-friendly urban environments.

With over 700 local organisations worldwide participating in Kidical Mass events, Guildford’s commitment to active travel is part of a global movement towards better, safer streets.
